Recommended Websites Engine Cooling System Components Since engine produces heat, it needs a cooling system to avoid overheating. All parts of a cooling system have one goal: to absorb and dissipate heat. Here are the basic components of an engine cooling system. Radiator. Radiator, also known as heat exchanger, is a primary component in an engine cooling system. It can be found in front of the car behind the grille. The main purpose of the radiator is to transfer heat from the hot coolant that flows through it to the air blown through it by the fan. Most modern cars use aluminum radiators composed of metal tubing and thousands of small metal fins. As the fluid passes through the radiator, the metal fins dissipate the engine heat into the air. Fan. It is commonly mounted behind the radiator. Fan is not necessary in some driving situations, since the car air passes over the radiator when its running. However, when it is not running, that's when the fan becomes important. The main purpose of the fan is to create and maintain air flow over the radiator when your car is moving slowly or is at a standstill. The fan is electric powered which usually runs when a sensor in the cooling system detects the need for additional airflow. Some car models have more than one fan. Thermostat. It is usually located in the front, top part of the engine, acting as the connection point for the upper radiator hose. Thermostat is an inexpensive but crucial component in the cooling system that allows the engine to heat up quickly and keep the engine at a constant temperature. It keeps the engine cool and hot and maintain the temperature when needed. Water Pump. This component pumps the water coolant through the system. It also keeps the coolant moving as long as the engine is running. The water pump is usually made of cast iron or cast aluminum and is usually mounted on the front of the engine. Automotive
